Weston loses last game of the season despite being 7 runs ahead

WESTON, Mass. — It was a great day to play baseball as the Buccaneers traveled to Weston to take on the Wildcats in the season finale for both teams.

While it was the last game of the season, Weston showed up to play on offense and defense. In the bottom of the first inning, the Wildcats put up three runs to take a 3-0 lead over Bedford.

Nicholas Cross kept up his incredible season at the plate, hitting his first career home run for the Wildcats. It was a fastball up in the zone that Cross caught up to and put about 20 feet beyond the fence. Cross had been working towards this homerun all season long. Anthony Jorajuria followed the Cross home run with a double, and Benoit Schiermeier hit a single. Then, Jorajuria and Schiemeier both came around to score.

The hitting continued in the second inning with senior Sam Meservi reaching base on a dropped third strike. Then, captain Gabe Johnson knocked in a single, his first hit of the day. Cross, who hits second after Johnson, got his second hit of the day. Although this one stayed inside the park, the ball went into the gap between the center and right fielder, and Cross legged in a triple, driving in Johnson. Jorajuria came up to bat and hit his second double of the day, driving in Cross. Marco Buchbinder then brought Jorajuria home, which gave Weston their seventh run of the day.

While all of this hitting was going on, Schiermeier was on the mound pitching another gem. Schiermeier gave up only three earned runs, pitching five full innings. Schiermeier added six more strikeouts to his total and gave a stellar starting pitching performance for Weston.

In the third inning, Meservi hit his first home run of the season in an absolute blast over the left-field wall. Senior Benny Mastrovsky then came up to plate. Mastrovsky, in his final at-bat in high school, worked himself a walk, getting on-base for the first time in his career. The Weston dugout roared with excitement as they all knew the significance of the at-bat as well. Mastrovsky then came around to score as the Bedford pitcher walked two and hit two other batters that inning.

By the time the sixth inning was completed, Weston had built up a large 10-3 lead over the Buccaneers. However, this is where the game would take a turn on a technicality. Jason Hooper came in to relieve Schiemeier and pitched a great sixth inning, allowing zero runs. However, he was not given enough rest time between outings and, thus, was ineligible to pitch. The Bedford coach realized this, and the game was ended early with the Buccaneers taking home the win despite being down seven runs in the last inning of the game.

The game may have ended on a sour note, especially for Weston’s seniors for whom this was their final high school baseball game, but Weston had a great day overall and, in the end, the scoreline was not the most important thing.

High school baseball is not just about winning. It is about learning what it takes to become an adult and all the life lessons that go along with that.

Weston baseball will be back next spring with a similar cast of characters as this season, and they will be looking to build off the improved performance at the end of this season. Go Wildcats!
