4. Marshall vs. Notre Dame – $1.25 million (2022)
Reeling from its loss to Ohio State in the season opener, Notre Dame looked to have a favorable matchup against Marshall. However, the Thundering Herd had other plans and decided to end the Fighting Irish’s season early by beating them 26-21 in South Bend. No. 8-ranked Notre Dame paid Marshall a whopping $1.25 million and were 20.5-point favorites in the game. A pick-six by the Thundering Herd’s Steven Gilmore with 4:25 left in the fourth quarter was the final nail in the coffin for the Fighting Irish. Now 0-2, new head coach Marcus Freeman will have his work cut out for him to resurrect Notre Dame’s season.
