Shamrock Series: A look back at Notre Dame’s success over the years

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (BVM) – The latest edition of the Shamrock Series is set to kickoff this Saturday, as Notre Dame will take on No. 16 BYU at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas beginning at 6:30 p.m. CT on NBC. The game will be the 11th contest of the Shamrock Series, a tradition that has continued to put Notre Dame on the map across the country.

The game will take place in the eighth different venue throughout the history of the Shamrock Series, and will be the first game Notre Dame has ever played in the state of Nevada. It will be the ninth all-time meeting between the Fighting Irish and BYU, with Notre Dame leading the series 6-2. The last time these teams met up in 2013, Notre Dame won 23-13 in South Bend.

BYU continues to see consistent success under head coach Kalani Sitake, starting the 2022 season 4-1 with its only loss coming to a ranked Oregon squad. Meanwhile, Notre Dame has started the season at a disappointing 2-2 in Marcus Freeman’s first year at the helm. Following losses at Ohio State and at home against Marshall, the Fighting Irish have rebounded with wins over Cal and North Carolina. With the history they have in the Shamrock Series, the game against BYU may be the perfect opportunity to turn around their season.

The Shamrock Series was first implemented at Notre Dame in 2009, allowing the Fighting Irish to play a marquee regular-season game at a neutral site across the country. Essentially, these contests have had the feel of in-season bowl games while allowing Notre Dame to expand its brand to different parts of the country and gain additional revenue.

On the field, one of the biggest storylines are the unique jerseys the program unveils for each Shamrock Series game.

This season, the Fighting Irish will wear an all-white jersey featuring gold script and shoulder stripes representing Las Vegas.

The other storyline going in is the incredible success the Fighting Irish have had in the series thus far, going a perfect 10-0 with some truly dominant victories. With the 11th edition of the Shamrock Series about to be played, here’s a look back at the first 10 games.
