Get to know Brother Rice HS baseball player Alex Tribul

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. — Alex Tribul, 18,  is a senior at Brother Rice High School and a force to be reckoned with on the pitcher’s mound.  He has passionately played baseball for 14 years. Alex’s main goal before leaving Brother Rice is to win the Catholic League and State Championship this year.  The Brother Rice Warriors baseball team have come close to winning the championship title but unfortunately fell short.  Tribul is looking to change that this Spring.

Tribul loves everything about the game. He shares, “as a pitcher, it’s you against the hitter. I love that competitive spirit and enjoy the adversity. Also, being a student and always learning not just about the game but about yourself is a special thing. Baseball will test you mentally and physically. I have learned a lot about myself through the game.” After Tribul graduates high school, he has big dreams of playing D1 baseball and being drafted out of college.

Playing baseball has taught Tribul how to be a team player. He understands that he can’t win on his own.  He depends on his teammates to truly win. “When every member of a team puts others before themselves, that is when something special happens,” says Tribul.

Before the start of a game, Tribul puts on his headphones and visualizes the upcoming innings. From putting on his cleats to taking the field, Tribul visualizes all of it and how he will strike out his opponents.

When Tribul was 12 years old, his dad gave him the best piece of advice. His dad quoted Coach Tim Kotke saying, “Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard.” Tribul admits that he was never the tallest, fastest, or most athletic player. He learned at a young age that he needed to work harder to get where he wanted to be. Since then, he’s worked hard every day pursuing his goals.  Tribul also receives support and inspiration from his Papa. His Papa told him to “trust in God because He has a plan for all of us.”  Tribul adds, “through all the hardships and setbacks, it wasn’t always easy believing He had a plan. Now, when I look back I see why He gave me that struggle. I became a better man and a better baseball player because of it.”

As with any sport, Tribul has faced many challenges on the field.  Tribul admits that his biggest challenge in baseball is dealing with failure. “No matter what position you play on the field, you will always fail more times than you succeed. Dealing with that failure is a difficult task I had to teach myself and learn to overcome. I manage my failure by reflecting and working on what I am weak at. If I can’t locate my fastball, I’ll work on having my catcher moving in and out in my pens. If I’m having trouble with my off speed, my next pen will consist more off speed pitches then fastballs. It’s about taking that failure and learning to better yourself,” shares Tribul.

Along with facing challenges during a game, sometimes mistakes are made.  Tribul recalls a mistake he made over the summer while playing a team from Ohio. Tribul reflects, “They had multiple D1 Power five and mid-major commits and it was a game we had to win. My off speed wasn’t working and was getting hit in the first few innings. After the second inning, I realized that I needed to figure it out quickly or we were going to lose. I took a deep breath, and refocused. As the game went on, I figured out my issues and started to have success. We later went on to win that game and then the tournament.”

The lessons learned from playing baseball will take Tribul great places in life.  Commitment, team work, and confidence are all attributes to a bright future.  Tribul offers this piece of advice to others, “I would encourage everyone to always trust the process and to bet on themselves. You never know what can happen, so always trust the process and put your faith in God.”
