Stetson Bennett could join rare group of oldest Heisman winners
Billy Sims, 1978 (23 years, 78 days)
Injuries may have slowed the Oklahoma running back from a fast start to his college career but Sims made the most of his skill set in his final two collegiate campaigns. After gaining another year of eligibility following a season–ending injury during his true sophomore campaign, Sims would return for a third year to moderate success. As a redshirt junior, the Sooners back would finally put the college football world on notice, rushing for 1,762 and 20 touchdowns in the team’s 11-1 season. The impressive work on the ground netted Sims the Heisman Trophy in 1978 at the age of 23. He would go on to top 1,500 rushing yards again in his senior season, also setting a career-high 22 touchdowns on the year. The Heisman winner would go on to be drafted first overall in the 1980 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions.
