8 NFL teams that have drafted No. 1 and then made playoffs
1978 Houston Oilers
While the Oilers didn’t finish the 1977 season with the NFL’s worst record, going 8-6, they obtained the first overall pick in the 1978 NFL Draft by trading tight end Jimmie Giles and their first- and second-round picks in the 1978 draft, and their third- and fifth-round picks in the 1979 draft. This move allowed Houston to jump up and take University of Texas star running back Earl Campbell with the top pick.
Campbell became an immediate star with the Oilers as he was named the Offensive Rookie of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year, a Pro Bowler and first-team All-Pro while leading Houston to a 10-6 record and an appearance in the AFC Championship. The running back would go on to five Pro Bowls, three first-team All-Pros, three Offensive Player of the Year awards and the 1979 MVP on his way to a Hall of Fame induction.
