Who will replace Mike Brey as Notre Dame’s next head coach?
5. Ryan Humphrey, Oklahoma assistant coach
Humphrey is a former Notre Dame player – who still holds the program record for blocks in a season (87, 2001-02) – and assistant under Brey who spent six seasons on the Fighting Irish staff. He left Notre Dame last summer to join Oklahoma and head coach Porter Moser but could be the right man to lead the Irish’s next chapter. During his coaching stint with Notre Dame, the former McDonald’s All-American helped with the growth of John Mooney, who led the ACC in rebounds in 2018-19. Humphrey would also fit the mold of Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick’s recent hires which include Marcus Freeman (football) and Niele Ivey (women’s basketball), both Black coaches with no previous head coaching experience. Freeman and Ivey appear to be the right hires early on, and Humphrey could help Swarbrick hit the trifecta.
