Top 5 offensive coordinator options for Alabama
4. Jason Garrett
Garrett having zero coaching experience at the collegiate level is something to keep in mind, though he was being rumored for the Stanford head-coaching job a couple of months ago. Regardless of level or team, Garrett would bring a lot of knowledge and experience with him to Tuscaloosa. Remembered most for his time as a backup quarterback behind Troy Aikman with the Dallas Cowboys in the 1990s, Garrett spent his final year as a player with the Miami Dolphins in 2004. The next season, he immediately jumped to the coaching ranks, becoming the Dolphins’ quarterbacks coach for none other than Saban. Garrett returned to Dallas as an offensive coordinator in the late 2000s, and eventually became the team’s head coach from 2011-19. He then spent two seasons as the offensive coordinator of the New York Giants. While the end of the current NBC Sports analyst’s tenure in the NFL was often criticized for his stale offense, it’s possible a stint at Alabama could resurrect his coaching career like it did for O’Brien and a few others under Saban over the past decade, and his ties with Bama’s head man can only help.
