Ranking the top 5 offensive coordinator candidates for Commanders
WASHINGTON (BVM) – The Washington Commanders are in search of their next offensive coordinator and are casting a wide net to find the right candidate.
It’s been nearly an entire month since Scott Turner was relieved of his duties as the Commanders’ offensive coordinator on Jan. 10 after three seasons in that role. Calling plays since 2020 when head coach Ron Rivera arrived in Washington, Turner’s offense never cracked the top 20 in yards gained or points scored.
It wasn’t all on Turner, however, due to the fact that nine different QBs took snaps for the Commanders over the last three seasons. Even with another year of a revolving door at quarterback this season, Washington just missed the playoffs with an 8-8-1 record despite averaging just 18.9 points per game (24th in the NFL).

Nonetheless, Turner is out and a new face will be brought in and trusted to not only improve this offense’s efficiency but also help groom the next franchise quarterback, whoever that is. Carson Wentz and Taylor Heinicke combined to start the lion’s share of games under center for Washington this season, but rookie quarterback Sam Howell showed flashes in a surprise win over the Dallas Cowboys during the regular season finale that could line him up to be the 2023 starter.
Whoever begins the season at QB for the Commanders next season will need a steady voice and trusted play caller to find success in a tough NFC East. With that in mind, here are the top five candidates to replace Turner as the Commanders’ offensive coordinator.
