RALEIGH, N.C. (BVM) — The New England Whalers were founded in 1972 by the World Hockey Association (WHA). The NHL and WHA merged seven years later, and the team became the Hartford Whalers. The franchise operated as the Whalers for 18 years until the team was moved to North Carolina by new owner Peter Karmanos and became the Carolina Hurricanes.
