Top 10 Florida State men’s basketball players of all time

9. Charlie Ward (1990-94)

Ward’s numbers aren’t quite as gaudy as some on this list, and that was in part due to his standout football career while at FSU. It’s the gridiron most recognize his college career for, as the quarterback was the 1993 Heisman Trophy winner and led the Seminoles to a national championship that same year. However, Ward also played basketball while in Tallahassee, and was part of some terrific Seminoles teams in the early 1990s playing alongside Sam Cassell and Bob Sura. A do-it-all player, Ward averaged 8.2 points, 3.1 rebounds and 4.4 assists across his four years on the hardwood, highlighted by a senior season in which he scored 10.5 points per contest and helped lead Florida State to the Elite Eight. Ward made his presence felt most on the defensive end, however, averaging 2.6 steals in his FSU career. He is still the Seminoles’ all-time leader in steals with 238, and is also ninth all-time in program history with 396 assists. Despite his football success in college, Ward actually went on to have a 12-year NBA career.
