Top 10 Florida State men’s basketball players of all time

4. Sam Cassell (1991-93)

There’s no doubt most remember Cassell for his 16-year NBA career or recognize him now as an assistant on Doc Rivers’ staff with the Philadelphia 76ers, but prior to his time in the NBA, Cassell was a special player in Tallahassee. The Baltimore native began his collegiate career at San Jacinto College in Houston before transferring to Florida State where he played out his junior and senior years. In two seasons with the Seminoles, Cassell averaged 18.3 points, 4.4 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 2.3 steals, forming a dynamic backcourt duo with Sura. Cassell’s 641 points as a senior are the sixth-best in a single season in FSU history, while his 97 steals that year are a single-season program record. The two-time second-team All-ACC guard helped lead Florida State to some of its deepest NCAA Tournament runs as the Seminoles made the Sweet 16 in 1992 and the Elite Eight in 1993.
