NASCAR Cup Series’ best by car number: 20-29

No. 24 (1950-present)

The No. 24 car isn’t one that saw a lot of success early on. However, it has become one of the cars NASCAR fans instantly think about when it comes to historic numbers, and that is mostly thanks to one driver: Jeff Gordon. The No. 24 was first driven by Dick Clothier, Gene Darragh and Lyle Scott in 1950, and saw a few notable drivers pop into it over the years headlined by Bobby Allison. However, when Gordon took over the No. 24 for Hendrick Motorsports in 1993, everything changed.

Gordon led the car to victory for the first time in 1994, earning two wins that season. He would earn double-digit victories in three consecutive seasons from 1996-98, claiming the Winston Cup Series championship in 1995, 1997, 1998 and 2001. Gordon continued racing in the No. 24 up until 2015, winning 93 career races. He then gave way to Chase Elliott for a couple of years, but since 2018, the Hendrick car has been manned by William Byron, who has produced four wins, including two in 2022. That now puts the number’s all-time wins total to 97, adding to an impressive amount of top-five (412) and top-10 (722) finishes.
