It was 20 games into the 1979-80 season when the Islanders took on the Colorado Rockies, now the New Jersey Devils. The team captured its first Stanley Cup that season and another season highlight came when Smith became the first goaltender in NHL history to be awarded a goal.

Smith still leads the franchise with 304 wins and has his No. 31 retired by the team.
