10 teams who could make a Cinderella run in March Madness
10. Southern Mississippi
Southern Mississippi has made the NCAA Tournament just three times, with its last appearance coming all the way back in 2011-12. However, at 25-6 and first in the Sun Belt Conference, the Golden Eagles seem poised to get back this year, and could make noise depending on what they face in their early-round matchups. Southern Miss plays good defense but can also score the ball when it needs to, and it’s thanks in large part to a talented trio that includes 16-point-per game scorer Austin Crowley, Chilean senior forward Felipe Haase, and 6-foot-8 senior forward DeAndre Pinckney.
Like most mid-major teams, size could be a factor in the tournament, but Southern Miss still seems capable of surprising. Although the team has lost two of its last four games, the Golden Eagles do have nice wins over Vanderbilt and Liberty on their resume. They will have to finish the job in the Sun Belt Tournament to get in, but are a scary team for a potential No. 3 or No. 4 seed should they do so.
