Ranking the top 10 NFL free agent moves of 2023
2. David Long, LB, Miami Dolphins
Long isn’t a household name but he could easily become that after just one season in Miami. The versatile linebacker can be deployed as a pass rusher, run stopper and cover man in space. Long racked up 18 total pressures in just 47 pass-rushing snaps for the Tennessee Titans last season in addition to 65 tackles and the second-best run stuff rate (6.6%) in the NFL. He even snatched two interceptions and allowed an opponent passer rating of 87.
David Long tackled opposing ball carriers for a loss or no gain on 6.6% of his run defense snaps last season, the 2nd-highest run stuff rate in the NFL (min. 200 run snaps).
Long also was effective in coverage, allowing -5.1 receptions over expected (6th among LB).#FinsUp https://t.co/5oON4aCJML pic.twitter.com/ABu6Ttv9rS

New defensive coordinator Vic Fangio requires his linebackers to play in space with heavy nickel sets and Long fits that role. He’s also a tone-setter, much like new Dolphins CB Jalen Ramsey, who could help rejuvenate Miami’s defense.
No big deal. Just former Titans and new Dolphins LB David Long recording a PBU from a motion cornerback position. Vic Fangio is going to get EVIL with this dude. pic.twitter.com/sEZiaYnpw5

Long might not be seen as a high-end signing now, but he could soon outplay his new two-year, $11 million contract.
