2. Luke Appling, SS, 1930-1943; 1945-1950
Appling has a good case for the top spot on this list and he’s inarguably one of the greatest shortstops in MLB history. The two-time AL batting champion spent his entire 20-year career with the White Sox (missed out on the 1944 season due to service in World War II) where he became the franchise’s all-time leader in hits (2,749) and times on base (4,062). Appling’s longevity – evidenced by his 15 seasons with a batting average over .300 and second batting title coming at age 36 – sets him apart from other legends. Upon his retirement, he had the most games played and double plays by a shortstop in MLB history. Appling was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1964 and his No. 4 jersey was retired by the White Sox in 1975.
