Meet multi-sport athlete, Weston High School’s Nick Cross

WESTON, Mass. — Nick Cross is a triple sports threat, playing Weston High School Varsity Baseball, Swimming and Football. Nick has been involved with both swimming and baseball since he was four years old and has been a significant contributor to each of the varsity teams.

Through hard work and dedication, Nick has greatly improved as a freestyle specialist (particularly sprints), ending his senior swim season placing 3rd in the 50 freestyle and 6th in the 100 freestyle at States. He was a part of the DCL Small Championship and State Championship teams and the State Champion 200 freestyle relay team (which also broke Weston’s Varsity record as well as the state meet record, becoming the 2nd fastest relay ever in the state in both D1 and D2). To cap off his amazing senior season where Nick also served as captain, he was named a Herald All-Scholastic as well as an Academic All-American.

In baseball, Nick has been captain for both his junior and senior years. During his sophomore year, the team won the DCL Championship despite their regular season record of 3-12. Nick was named a DCL All-Star that year as well as his junior year and MVP during his junior year.

Although he just started playing football in his senior year, he also was a big contributor to that team, scoring three touchdowns during the season and being named “Rookie Player of the Year.”

In all three of his sports, Nick is known as a leader and positive role model for the younger players. In addition, Nick does anything asked of him to help his teams achieve success. Part of that is his own efforts to better himself everyday, lifting every morning at 5:30 a.m., working hard at practice, and staying after practice for extra reps or sprints. We know Nick’s hard work will pay off in his next chapter at Boston College, where he intends to join club baseball and swimming.

What are your goals within your sport/athletic dreams?

Nick Cross: Helping my teams find success when it matters most, especially getting our baseball team to the state tournament this season.

What is your biggest challenge in your sports, and what do you do to manage this challenge?

Cross: Staying calm before my games or races. To manage this, I have to remember that I have put in the hard work and need to let that pay off rather than psyching myself out.

What was the best advice you were ever given?

Cross: My mom taught me to envision my ideal outcome for a game or race. Every night before a big sporting event, I think about the event and what I want to happen from start to finish. This also helps me as it allows me to experience the event beforehand so it is not nearly as nerve-racking when the time to perform comes.

What do you love about your sports?

Cross: For swimming, I love the fact that everything comes down to hundredths of seconds and the little things, like a turn or start. For baseball, I love that you always have to be ready for your moment to shine, since the second you lose concentration, the ball always finds you. For football, I love the intensity involved and the amount of preparation that goes into game planning. For all of the sports, I love my teammates, as they are what make the sport truly fun.

Describe a mistake you made while competing and how you overcame it.

Cross: I underestimated a pitcher that did not throw very hard. He wound up striking me out, which taught me to not underestimate anyone, to always make sure you keep your ego suppressed, and to let your skills do the talking.

What has being a member of a team taught you?

Cross: To forgive – everyone makes mistakes, including myself. The most important thing is moving past these mistakes as they will eventually be moments of learning that can lead to success.
