MUSTANG, Okla. (BVM) — Lee Blankenship is heading into Year 5 of being Mustang’s head football coach, and he’s ready to lead the Broncos back to the playoffs. This season, his program may be able to do that with a new quarterback on his roster: viral sensation Mikey Gow.

Gow announced on January 4 that he would be transferring to Allen High School in Texas and competing for one of the nation’s most prominent high school football programs. However, just six months later, it was announced that Gow would be heading north and transferring to Mustang High School, and Blankenship took to social media to research the QB.

“Social media is not going to win Mikey any starting jobs, but you know you can get a look at the kid and see the talents that he brings,” Blankenship said. “Throwing the ball the way he does, is very impressive … and the way social media is today is a cool thing for the kid to get that kind of recognition, and it really takes a mature kid to be able to handle that recognition, and that’s what I think Mikey is.”

Gow arrived in Mustang on June 9 in time for the team’s annual camp, and he was able to catch up on the playbook and took the field for one series at the camp game.

“He has a very high football IQ,” Blankenship said. “That’s something that struck me early … He had three practices before we had our game, but he still came in and really played fearlessly. It was a great experience for him.”

Gow’s arrival has had an impact, bringing plenty of excitement to the Mustang football program, but it will take more than one player’s potential contributions to help the program build off last year’s 8-3 campaign.

“We’re not always going to be as athletic as teams that we play, but we know who we are, and it’s all about trying to be consistent,” Blankenship said. “We have a blue-collar program, and we thrive on hard work. That’s something that we preach every day, and Mikey has done a great job of coming in and being a part of that.”

Heading into his junior year and given his social media presence, there may be some high expectations for Gow to lead Mustang to a state title, but Blankenship will make sure his team takes it one step at a time.

“We want to control what we can control and be the very best version of us,” Blankenship said. “If we do that, then good things will happen for us.”

It’s been an extraordinary athletic journey for Gow up to this point, and there will be plenty of obstacles to overcome in a Bronco uniform, but heading into the 2023-24 high school football season and under Blankenship’s leadership, the sky remains the limit for him.

“We’re thrilled to death that he’s here. I want to reiterate that,” Blankenship said. “I’m excited to see what he’s going to become as a Mustang Bronco. None of the other stuff really matters that much to us or anybody around here. It’s just what he’s going to do with our jersey on. So that’s to be continued and to be determined, and we are absolutely thrilled to have the opportunity to find out.”
