NFL Hall of Famers who went from millionaires to bankruptcy
Ray Guy
It’s unclear exactly how much Guy made during his 14-year NFL career (1973-1986), but he did have $225,000 left on his contract when he made the decision to retire. His legacy as the greatest punter in NFL history should have set him up for life with lucrative deals, but Guy eventually fell on hard times and filed for Chapter 13 bankruptcy in 2011.
“Sometimes, things just happen,” Guy told the Clarion-Ledger about his bankruptcy (via the Washington Post). “The only thing you can do is deal with it. I made some bad decisions, did some things I shouldn’t have done. Nothing illegal. Just buying this, buying that, overspending. Material things don’t mean anything to me anymore. I’m doing good, living within my means, doing the best I can.”
The 2014 Pro Football Hall of Famer was ordered by the court to sell his three Super Bowl rings to pay off his debts (they sold for $96,216).
Guy held a net worth of $400,000 at the time of his death in 2022, according to Celebrity Net Worth.
