Even with Heisman–winning seasons like Robert Griffin III’s in 2011, the school’s most successful run arguably came just a few years back. After taking over the program’s coaching job from Matt Rhule just a season before, head coach Dave Aranda quickly turned a poor 2-7 showing in 2020 into a 12-2 record and Sugar Bowl appearance in 2021. Led by quarterback Gerry Bohanon and running back Abram Smith, the Bears dominated conference competition en route to wins over Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and eventually Ole Miss. The return to relevance came following plenty of changes to the program over the previous decade and signaled a chance for past stardom.
