Ranking the top 10 Indianapolis Colts rushers of all time

6. Tom Matte, 1961-72

The Colts selected the Ohio State quarterback seventh overall in the 1961 NFL Draft. His rushing threat was clear in college and was given the opportunity to share the backfield with Colts’ legend Lenny Moore. He stayed with Baltimore his entire 12-year career, amassing 4,646 rushing yards and 45 touchdowns.

In the 1968 NFL championship game, Matte scored three touchdowns on the way to a Colts’ victory and a trip to the Super Bowl. The Colts would fall to the Jets in that game, but Matte became the first player to eclipse 100 yards rushing in a Super Bowl. Matte got his Super Bowl ring following the 1970 season although he was sidelined with an injury for the majority of the season. Years after retirement, Matte returned to the league as a member of the Baltimore Ravens radio broadcast team from 1996 to 2005.
