The Phillies extended Nola a qualifying offer earlier this week, one he is likely to decline to earn more money as a free agent. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean the Phillies are out of the hunt when it comes to retaining the talented righty despite failing to come to an extension over the past year. There is no doubt Philadelphia is paying a lot for some of the big bats in their lineup, but they will continue to need pitching to get over the hump after coming close, yet falling short of a World Series title the last two years. Perhaps the front office in Philly is content rolling with Zack Wheeler, Taijuan Walker and Ranger Suarez while eventually going younger, but losing Nola would compromise the depth of Philadelphia’s starting rotation right now. While Nola’s time in the City of Brotherly Love could very well be done, there’s still a chance the Phillies look to keep what has been a key cog of their roster over the last decade.
