The Yankees also find themselves in need of starting pitching depth heading into 2024. While American League Cy Young Award winner Gerrit Cole is the clear ace in the clubhouse, fellow starting pitchers Carlos Rodon and Nestor Cortes disappointed last season due to injuries while Luis Severino and Domingo German both hit free agency after difficult seasons.

Though Woodruff wouldn’t provide immediate help for New York, he could enter the rotation later in the season if the Yankees make the playoff push they hope to. Given that New York has never been shy about spending money in free agency, adding a high-risk, high-reward investment into Woodruff wouldn’t have the same financial impact it would have on a smaller market team. If Woodruff can return to form, a 1-2 tandem of Cole and Woodruff would be a formidable duo for the Yankees.
