This would be a drop in competition for Ashford, but perhaps time at a lower-tier school would help him build his confidence and hone his skills while potentially transferring back up in the future. For Ashford, Akron makes total sense as his former offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Oregon, Joe Morehead, is the head coach for the Zips.

With the loss of redshirt senior quarterbacks DJ Irons and Jeff Undercuffler Jr., who have both exhausted their eligibility, Akron is left with just redshirt sophomore Tahj Bullock with playing experience. Given Ashford’s knowledge of Morehead’s system and his experience as a starter in the SEC, he would be a slam-dunk pickup for the Zips.
