Ranking the top 10 MLB players from the state of Ohio
9. Thurman Munson, C
As the New York Yankees’ backstop for 10 seasons and change, Munson was a seven-time All-Star and a three-time Gold Glover. He almost certainly would’ve added to his accolades if not for his untimely death.
Munson attended Canton’s Lehman High School and continued to Kent State University. He was drafted fourth overall in the 1968 MLB Draft and was the 1970 AL Rookie of the Year. He lifted the Yanks to consecutive World Series titles in 1977 and 1978.
Munson died suddenly in a plane crash in 1979.
