Pete Alonso to be shopped?: 5 possible landing spots

Minnesota Twins

The trade: The Twins acquire Alonso and Reed Garrett. The Mets acquire Gabriel Gonzalez, Brandon Winokur and Darren Bowen.

SNY color commentator and Mets’ legend Keith Hernandez has compared Alonso to Twins’ great Harmon Killebrew over the years. Alonso does not have the resume of the 13-time All-Star, but his power bat should definitely play at Target Field. Carlos Santana has been the team’s first baseman this season and it would be ideal to upgrade the position. Garrett, who has a 3.00 ERA in 2024, would also be a nice addition to the bullpen with multiple years of team control.

Gonzalez is the No. 83 prospect in baseball and he could be an intriguing player for Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns. Gonzalez does not turn 21 until January and there is an expectation that more power is coming to his 5-foot-11 frame. He also has a great arm that would fit perfectly in right field. Winokur is a great athlete who has played shortstop thus far in his pro career, but he has not hit well so far in the lower minor league levels. Bowen is Minnesota’s No. 28 prospect and projects as a major-league arm, whether that is at the back end of a rotation or in a bullpen role.
