5 teams who could trade for Cody Bellinger if Cubs sell
CHICAGO (BVM) – It was an exciting offseason for the Chicago Cubs as the team was able to bring back Cody Bellinger, sign Shota Imanaga and pry manager Craig Counsell away from the Milwaukee Brewers.
Unfortunately, the excitement has come to a screeching halt as the team is in the midst of a summer swoon. Chicago is eight games under .500 and six games out of the wild card with six teams between it and a postseason spot.
This could result in the Cubs being sellers at this year’s trade deadline with Cody Bellinger at the forefront of rumors. The Athletic reported in a collaborative piece that he “will likely become a much-discussed name again near the deadline,” if the team continues to spiral downward.
The former NL MVP is having a down season compared to his career norms, but he still has a .760 season OPS.
Bellinger signed a three-year, $80-million deal this offseason, but he has a player option after each season. There is a decent chance he declines it, which would make him just a rental piece. This would hurt the value that the Cubs could get back in a trade.
If Chicago does opt to sell, Bellinger will still be sought after. These are the teams that would be most interested.
