Ranking each Big Ten starting QB for the 2024 football season
18. MJ Morris, Maryland
Maryland will transition from veteran Taulia Tagovailoa to a relatively unknown commodity this fall as either Morris or Billy Edwards Jr. are expected to be under center. Morris might ultimately have a leg up on the job after transferring from NC State where he played in nine games the past two years, throwing for 1,367 yards and 14 touchdowns. The 6-foot-1 sophomore could develop into a nice prospect, but he may need some time to adjust with the Terrapins.
17. Mike Wright, Northwestern
Wright brings plenty of experience to Northwestern after spending the past four years playing at Vanderbilt and Mississippi State. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound signal caller, who was a late portal addition as Brendan Sullivan left the Wildcats for Iowa, has a dual-threat skill set that can bring a different element to the Northwestern offense, but he will likely need to be more effective with his arm for the Wildcats to surprise this season.
16. Athan Kaliakmanis, Rutgers
Kaliakmanis is going from one Big Ten team to another after transferring from Minnesota to Rutgers during the offseason. The 6-foot-4, 205-pound junior showed some flashes of upside with the Golden Gophers during a 2023 season where he threw for 1,838 yards and 14 touchdowns, but his lack of dual-threat ability and shaky accuracy could hold the Scarlet Knights’ offense back at times.
15. Luke Altmyer, Illinois
Altmyer was decent in his first season as a starter at Illinois after transferring from Ole Miss and will look to build on that this fall. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound quarterback threw for 1,883 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2023 while completing nearly 65% of his passes, but he will need to cut down on turnovers for a better season in 2024 as he threw 10 picks last year.
