Yaroslav Askarov requests trade: 5 possible landing spots
Montreal Canadiens
The trade: The Canadiens acquire Askarov. The Predators acquire Logan Mailloux and the Canadiens’ 2025 first-round pick.
Sam Montembault is coming off of a career year in Montreal and he is presently the team’s No. 1 goaltender. The 27-year-old is an okay stopgap, but it is hard to imagine that he is the long-term solution in net. Montreal has some intriguing, younger options in the organization including current backup Cayden Primeau and Jacob Fowler at Boston College, but neither project to be the caliber of goalie that Askarov is expected to be. Askarov could potentially start for the Canadiens as soon as this season.
Mailloux, a first-round pick in 2021, is coming off his first professional season in which he tallied 47 points in 72 AHL games with the Laval Rocket. The 21-year-old defenseman was rewarded by making his NHL debut on April 16. He has the potential to be a good top-four defenseman in the league for a long time.
