NEW YORK (BVM) – With the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles gearing up for this Sunday’s Super Bowl, players are just one step away from a taste of pro football glory. 

Every NFL player dreams of winning the Super Bowl, but for some former champions, the reality of concussions and sub-concussive injuries has made them wish that they never played pro football. 

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) cannot be confirmed in a living person and can only be officially diagnosed through an autopsy. In 2024, Mass General Brigham researchers found that an alarming 35% of former NFL players thought they had the brain disease.

Here are five notable former Super Bowl champions who regret playing in the NFL. While their championship rings remain key parts of their lives, the lasting brain trauma has made them question whether the glory was worth it.
