5 Super Bowl champions who regret playing in the NFL
Mark Rypien
Quarterback Rypien said that he suffered “dozens of concussions and thousands of sub-concussive injuries” throughout his career – a legacy that included winning Super Bowl MVP and two championship rings.
“(After football), I suffer from a complex stew of mental health conditions,” Rypien told KHQ-TV. “Dark places, depression, anxiety, addictions, poor choices, poor decisions.”
Guilty of being depressed all the time, Rypien even tried to take his own life by swallowing 150 Advil pills. Fortunately, his wife’s timely intervention saved his life.
When asked whether he regrets playing football, Rypien responded:
“I would change it (because) I don’t enjoy going through the strategies and the medicine to just try to live a normal life,” Rypien told KHQ-TV. “As much as I love sports. I’d try something else. I’d become a really good swimmer. I’d become a really good tennis player. I’d become something.”
