Utah, Smith welcome another familiar face in Marco Anthony

SALT LAKE CITY (BVM) – New Utah men’s basketball coach Craig Smith continues to add familiar faces to his roster, including another former player of his at Utah State.

Marco Anthony announced his plan on Tuesday to play for Smith again and transfer to join the Utes.

“We are pumped to have Marco join the Runnin’ Utes family,” Smith said in a press release. “Marco has great character and loves to be in the gym. At 6-foot-5 and 220 pounds, Marco is a big physical player that brings a ton of versatility on both sides of the ball.

“In addition to his 41-inch vertical, he has great skill and can guard anyone on the floor. Marco understands how to win at a high level and brings a wealth of experience in the NCAA Tournament to our program.”

The 6-foot-5 San Antonio native led the Aggies in minutes played and averaged 10 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists last season. Anthony made his presence felt on the defensive end, too, on the way to earning All-Mountain West Defensive Team honors. He helped Utah State to its third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and a No. 11 seed in March.

Before his time in Logan, Anthony spent his first two seasons at Virginia where he won an NCAA National Championship with the Cavaliers in 2019. He played in 35 games over two seasons at Virginia following an outstanding prep career in which he averaged 25.5 points, 10.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists as a senior at Holmes High School.

Anthony is the second former Utah State player to transfer to Utah in the last week, joining Rollie Worster who started 25 games for the Aggies last season as a true freshman.
