Matt Schaub: Where is the former Texans QB now?

HOUSTON (BVM) — Following a promising career at Virginia, Matt Schaub was destined for a great career in the NFL. From 2004-20, Schaub showed NFL fans he had what it took to play in one of the world’s most popular sports.

College career

For four years, Schaub suited up for the Virginia Cavaliers. Schaub redshirted in his freshman year, and in his sophomore season, he would play in 12 games, splitting time with Bryson Splitter. Schaub finished with 1,524 passing yards, 10 touchdown passes and eight interceptions.

In 2002, Schaub would have a breakout season leading the Cavaliers to an overall record of 9-5 and an AP ranking of No. 22. He also captured ACC Player of the Year and ACC Offensive Player of the Year awards. Schaub headed into the 2003 season as one of the Heisman favorites but would suffer a shoulder injury to begin the season. Despite that, Schaub would cap off his career as one of the best Cavalier quarterbacks.

He still holds multiple records at the school, including most career passing yards (7,502), best completion percentage in a career (67.0), and consecutive games with a TD pass (14). His No. 7 jersey is also retired by the school.

Professional career

The 2004 NFL Draft included QBs Eli Manning, Philip Rivers and Ben Roethlisberger. So, despite his excellent college career, Schaub fell to the third round of the draft. Drafted by the Atlanta Falcons, Schaub would suit up for the team for three seasons and he’d even start one game after Michael Vick was injured.

In 2007, Schaub would be traded to the Houston Texans for second-round picks in the 2007 and 2008 drafts. Texans QB David Carr would be released, and Schaub seemingly became Houston’s starter.

For seven seasons, Schaub would be the designated signal caller for the Texans. Two seasons stood out for Schaub. In 2009, he led the NFL in passing yards (4,770), completions (396) and yards gained per game (298). Schaub was also selected to the Pro Bowl. The team finished with a 9-7 record, but in the following season, Schaub and the Texans would find more success.

Following a divisional round exit in 2011, Houston bounced back with an overall record of 12-4. It was also another Pro Bowl year for Schaub. He finished with 4,008 passing yards, 22 TDs and 12 interceptions. The Texans would again be bounced from the playoffs after running into the New England Patriots in the divisional round.

From 2012 on, Schaub’s career began on a downward trajectory after setting an NFL record for pick-sixes thrown in consecutive games.

Schaub had quick stints with the Oakland Raiders and with the Baltimore Ravens. Following those stints, Schaub returned to the team that first took a chance on him. Schaub played four seasons in Atlanta, and in his first year back with the made, he traveled to the Super Bowl in 2016.

He would retire in early 2021. It still wound up being an impressive career for him as he spent 17 years in the NFL.

Net worth and career earnings

According to Celebrity Net Worth, Schaub is worth $40 million. He also earned $94.3 million, according to SpoTrac

Post-playing career

Following his nearly two-decade career, Schaub is now enjoying his time away from the game, taking care of his kids. There has been talk about him joining a broadcast booth sometime in the future. And with the knowledge of an NFL QB, Schaub can provide great insight into the game of football.

“Knowing football and how it’s evolved over the last 17 years since my career started and understanding those things to try to help give the people at home who don’t know the game a better understanding of what is actually taking place,” Schaub said via atlantafalcons.com. “What are players are looking for? What are coaches trying to do with the scheme? That to me is so intriguing and something I feel I could be very good at given the right opportunity.”

Players have to be able to prove themselves on the field. Schaub did that. With his career behind, he looks to be enjoying time off the gridiron. But be on the lookout as Schaub potentially looks to become a broadcaster and set new milestones for himself.
