Top 10 Florida State men’s basketball players of all time
7. Al Thornton (2003-07)
In an era of more and more one-and-done players in college basketball, Thornton is a nice throwback to a player who truly developed over the course of four years. As a freshman, the 6-foot-8 guard played just around eight minutes per game. He saw more playing time as a sophomore, showing flashes as he averaged 9.1 points. However, it was his third year in 2005-06 where Thornton’s game began to take off, as he averaged 16.1 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 1.2 assists, becoming a second-team All-ACC player. In 2006-07, Thornton became a first-team All-ACC player and was runner-up for the ACC Player of the Year award as he scored nearly 20 points per game, also averaging 7.2 rebounds. 1.5 steals and 1.1 blocks. Thornton helped the Seminoles to a 22-13 record that season, becoming a true building block for what Hamilton has eventually grown at the program. Thornton would score 1,521 points – a top-10 all-time program mark – in his FSU career before playing in the NBA until 2011.
