5 standouts from the Oklahoma Sooners’ spring game

4. Kip Lewis, LB

Having more defensive players than offensive players on this list might come as a surprise, but it’s a testament to how well the unit played on Saturday, particularly early on. For Sooners fans, that’s a welcome sight after the defense struggled tremendously across Oklahoma’s seven losses last year. One player who can’t shoulder a whole lot of blame for last season’s struggles is Lewis, who didn’t see the field much as a freshman. However, the 6-foot-1, 200-pound Texas native looks like he is poised to take a sophomore leap in 2023, racking up an impressive 11 tackles, two of which went for loss, throughout Saturday’s contest. While one strong scrimmage performance doesn’t mean Lewis is suddenly going to be starting on Saturdays in the fall, the former four-star’s improvement is something the Sooners hope continues, and it should help him climb the depth chart.
