Top 10 all-time leading rushers in Indiana HS football
9. Darren Evans, Warren Central (2004-06)
Evans is remembered fondly by many across the Hoosier State thanks to a tremendous career at Warren Central that put him towards the top of several IHSAA record lists. Rushing for 7,220 yards in his high school career, Evans put together three consecutive 2,000-yard seasons, culminating with 2,801 yards and 61 touchdowns in a senior year in which he won Mr. Football honors. The All-American also led the Warriors to four consecutive state championships, and sits in the top 10 on Indiana’s single-season and career scoring lists.
Coming out of Warren Central, the 6-foot, 225-pound running back was ranked No. 304 in the Class of 2007 and rated as a three-star recruit. It led him to Virginia Tech, where Evans had a terrific 2008 season in which he ran for 1,265 yards and 11 touchdowns, earning second-team All-ACC honors. He also broke the Hokies’ single-game rushing record that season with 253 yards in a contest against Maryland.
Unfortunately, Evans tore his ACL in 2009, but would return to have a strong season at Virginia Tech once again in 2010. He was not selected in the 2011 NFL Draft, but would earn brief stints with his home-state Indianapolis Colts and the Tennessee Titans in the pros.
