Ranking the Dallas Cowboys’ top 10 QBs in franchise history

7. Craig Morton (1965-74)

The Cowboys used the fifth overall pick in the 1965 NFL Draft on Morton and after backing up Don Meredith for four seasons, he got his chance in 1969. Morton led Dallas to Super Bowl V in his second year as the starter but the Cowboys would come up short against the Baltimore Colts. Tom Landry would run a two-QB system in 1971 with Morton and Roger Staubach which ultimately led to a Super Bowl victory.

Staubach entered 1972 as the starter, but Morton took advantage of the situation and eventually took the job, finishing fifth in the league in passing yards (2,396). Morton was replaced by Staubach in the playoffs that season and he would never start another game for the Cowboys. He was traded to the New York Giants in 1976.
