Ranking the top 10 games of the Red River Rivalry
9. 2001: No. 3 Oklahoma 14, No. 5 Texas 3
Just as they would again in both 2002 and 2004, Oklahoma and Texas entered the 2001 edition of the Red River Rivalry as top-five teams in the country. Following Oklahoma’s blowout victory over the Longhorns in their national championship season the year prior, this contest was a lot lower scoring, and much closer. The game is often remembered for one key moment that occurred late. With Texas backed up on its own two-yard line, Sooners defensive back Roy Williams leaped into Longhorns quarterback Chris Simms, making a hit that knocked the ball out and into the hands of linebacker Teddy Lehman whose score sealed Oklahoma’s 14-3 victory. It was the first time Oklahoma – who finished 11-2 that season – won back-to-back games in the series since the 1980s.
With the Red River Showdown today, it seemed fitting to celebrate the 17-year anniversary of Roy Williams' "Superman tackle." pic.twitter.com/5os2GGtUCB
