Ranking the top 10 games of the Red River Rivalry
6. 1996: Oklahoma 30, No. 25 Texas 27
The Red River Rivalry took on a new meaning in 1996 as Texas and Oklahoma played for the first time as Big 12 opponents. Although the Sooners were not having a good season, coming into the game 0-4 and ultimately finishing the year 3-8, they laid everything on the line against their rival. Meanwhile, Texas was ranked No. 25 in a season that would ultimately see the Longhorns finish 8-5 behind talented sophomore running back Ricky Williams. Perhaps the most disappointing loss that year came here against the Sooners, as Texas held the lead at halftime and an 11-point advantage in the fourth quarter. Oklahoma erased that deficit in just four-and-a-half minutes, ultimately sending the game to overtime, where, after Texas kicked a field goal, running back James Allen would go on to score the winning touchdown.
