NHL players who went from millionaires to bankruptcy
Darren McCarty
McCarty filed for bankruptcy as an active NHL player in 2006. The four-time Stanley Cup champion made an estimated $17 million over his 15-year NHL career (1993-2009).
Bankruptcy documents revealed that McCarty had debts of $6.2 million with assets far less at $1.9 million, according to ESPN. He owed money to banks, credit card companies, friends, utilities, law firms, a roofing company and casinos, CBC reported.
“He’s not making the money he used to make,” McCarty’s lawyer Marty Fried told the Detroit Free Press (via ESPN).
The NHL Players’ Association lists McCarty’s salary at the time of the bankruptcy as $800,000.
To pay off debts, McCarty auctioned off the three Stanley Cup rings he had at the time, two replica Stanley Cup trophies, a Corvette, jerseys, photos and other memorabilia.
