NHL players who went from millionaires to bankruptcy
Evander Kane
The current Edmonton Oilers left wing has been caught up in an ongoing bankruptcy case over the last few years.
Kane filed under Chapter 7 in 2021, even though his career earnings at the date of the bankruptcy were about $53 million. He listed $27 million in debt against $10 million in assets, according to USA Today.
He listed 47 creditors, which included the money he owed because of gambling debt and a bank loan, according to the New York Post. The case is so bizarre that one creditor – his former girlfriend – alleged that Kane owed her $3 million for abortions, according to The Athletic.
To help pay off his debts, Kane sold his $3.4 million mansion. Much of his debt was wiped out in mid-2023 through a court order.
