The namesake for the prize that the majors’ best pitchers strive for, Young was known for gobbling up frames. He’s the major leagues’ all-time pacer in wins (511), starts (815), complete games (749), and innings pitched (7,356.0). Young was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1937.

He was the first hurler of the 20th century to win the pitcher’s Triple Crown, racking up 33 wins and posting a 1.62 ERA and 158 strikeouts to lead the AL in 1901.

Young was born on a farm near Gilmore, Ohio, on March 22, 1867. He threw for rural teams in the state before signing with the minor-league Canton Nadjys in 1890.
