5. George Sisler, 1B

According to fellow Baseball Hall of Famer Ty Cobb, Sisler was the nearest thing to a perfect ballplayer.

Sisler won the AL’s first MVP award in 1922, leading the majors with a .420 batting average. Rogers Hornsby’s .424 mark in the 1924 go-round is the only one to reach that threshold since. Sisler’s 41-game hitting streak was an AL record until Joe DiMaggio broke it in 1941.

Sisler was also consistent with his glove and dangerous on the base paths. He spent most of his 15-year career with the St. Louis Browns before being sold to the Washington Senators, then the Boston Braves.

Sisler was born in Manchester, Ohio, about 12 miles south of Akron.
