4. Mike Schmidt, 3B/1B

Adept with his glove and bat, Schmidt was a cornerstone who helped the Philadelphia Phillies reconstruct into a World Series winner in 1980.

A three-time NL MVP with 10 Gold Gloves, he’s regarded as one of the best third basemen to take the diamond. He was patient and powerful at the plate, leading his league in walks four times. Schmidt’s 548 career homers rank 16th all-time and are the most of any Ohio-born player. He led the majors in long balls six times over his 18 years as a pro.

Before his Baseball Hall of Fame career, Schmidt attended Dayton’s Fairview High School and played collegiately at Ohio University.
