Pete Alonso to be shopped?: 5 possible landing spots
Chicago Cubs
The trade: The Cubs acquire Alonso and Jake Diekman. The Mets acquire Moises Ballesteros, Will Sanders and Matt Mervis
The Cubs are 2-8 in their last 10 games and two games under .500, but they are still fine. But it is fair to assess what has gone wrong up to this point in the season. The team’s biggest issues have been the offense and the bullpen. Chicago has long been linked as a potential landing spot for Alonso and it still makes sense to swing big for him. Diekman would also be a nice throw-in.
Ballesteros would be the big prize here. He is the Cubs’ No. 6 prospect according to MLB Pipeline and the No. 91 prospect in all of baseball. The 20-year-old Venezuelan may not stick behind the plate, but his left-handed swing would be nice to receive for a rental. Sanders was a fourth-round pick by the Cubs last summer and has the potential to be a mid-rotation starter and Mervis has struggled to cement a role with the big-league club. The 26-year-old first baseman has a .887 OPS in AAA this season.
