Top 10 Tennessee Volunteers football players of all time
9. Gene McEver, RB (1928-31)
McEver led the nation in scoring as a sophomore (130 points) and his 276 career points still has him inside the program’s top-ten list all-time. Tennessee was undefeated with McEver on the field, winning 27 games and tying in three. McEver would have been a strong candidate to win the Heisman Trophy, but the award was not handed out until 1935.
Tennessee opens its 2024 season in 28 days.
Gene McEver, who wore No. 28 for the Vols, was a standout tailback that Robert Neyland called,“the best player I ever coached.”
McEver was the program’s first-ever All-American in 1929.
